The Autistic Student University Transition Toolkit

The Autistic Student University Transition Toolkit is a practical, autism-friendly workbook designed to help autistic students prepare for university with more confidence, structure and independence. Inside, students can work through clear guidance, checklists, reflection exercises and planning pages at their own pace. The toolkit supports every stage of the transition, from applying for Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) and speaking with university support services, to planning accommodation, managing sensory needs, building routines and preparing for Freshers Week. It also includes practical tools for independent living, executive functioning, creating a support network and navigating the first 90 days at university. Parents, carers and family members are included too, with a dedicated support guide to help them offer reassurance without taking over.

Inside the toolkit, you’ll find support with:

  • Understanding university readiness and identifying personal support needs
  • Applying for DSA and preparing for a needs assessment
  • Accessing disability, wellbeing and academic support services
  • Choosing and planning suitable accommodation
  • Building confidence with cooking, budgeting, laundry and self-care
  • Creating routines, study schedules and weekly plans
  • Managing sensory needs and identifying safe spaces on campus
  • Preparing for Freshers Week without pressure to do everything
  • Building a trusted support network
  • Setting realistic goals for the first 90 days at university
  • Parent and carer guidance, checklists, planners and progress trackers

Created to feel calm, clear and manageable, this toolkit helps students take small, meaningful steps towards a university experience that works for them. Perfect for autistic students preparing to start university, as well as parents, carers, schools, colleges and support professionals.
